Project Description:

SESC worked with our mentor, HIES, to conduct asbestos and Hazardous Materials survey of approximately 29 Kaiser Facilities located on the Islands of Oahu, Maui and the Big Island, Hawaii. The purpose of the survey was to provide a basis for data gathering, sampling, analysis and reporting of hazardous materials that include asbestos-containing materials and lead based paint. SESC also helped perform all necessary services for abatement related to asbestos. This included a GIS based computer program that allows the client to select clinics based on search criteria to see asbestos and lead concentrations and other related material. SESC also conducted asbestos training for Kaiser Permanente employees so they know how to conduct periodic maintenance and inspections in asbestos contaminated areas.

Project Description:

SESC worked under contract with our mentor, HIES, to remove lead from earthen berm barriers, design and implementation of erosion control of Target Range Berms A, B, C, D, E and F located in the Puuloa Training facility at Ewa Beach, HI. The berms were excavated using heavy construction equipment and contaminated material was stored onsite. The lead removal process for the rifle ranges used a soil washing method from mobile equipment regularly used for mining operations. The erosion control berm design used geogrids for benching and slope retention. The lead removal process for the pistol range use d a proprietary pneumatic soil evacuation process resulting in the removal of 135 tons of lead. The workflow and process were design exclusively through the company’s engineering design team. SESC functioned in Project Management, Site Supervisor and Day-to-Day Operations Manager roles for the project.

Project Description:

Impervious Surface Map (ISM™) for Stormwater Management, City of Durham, NC. 

An Impervious Surface Map (ISM™) was produced for the City of Durham, NC (110 square miles) using 4-band multispectral QuickBird satellite imagery. The multispectral orthoimagery was precisely registered to Durham’s existing parcel and landbase map layers to ensure seamless integration with their existing GIS and landbase and utility billing systems. Impervious surfaces were quantified for each of about 70,000 parcels in square feet and percent per parcel. Parcels included residential at different densities, commercial, industrial, and other landuses. Deliverables included the 1”=400’ (± 7feet) multispectral orthoimagery (2007 included the entire county of Durham), and the impervious surface map with associated attribute tables.
